"The true nature of music is bliss"

Beven Elankumaran is an Australian composer, music producer, arranger, orchestrator and multi-instrumentalist with Sri Lankan heritage, currently based between Chennai and Los Angeles. A Magna Cum Laude graduate from the prestigious Berklee College of Music (May 2019), Beven dual majored in Film Scoring and Electronic Production & Design.

Having received a sound training in western classical music and composition from his Bachelor of Music and Commerce from Monash University in Australia, Beven came to Berklee knowing exactly what skillsets he needed for the realization of his dreams as being a film composer. Regarding his decision for choosing his dual major, he cites that being an Indian classical dancer (Bharathanatya) he loves writing music for anything visual, and Film Scoring is just that. Being an ardent observer of the interplay between sound design and music in visual media, Beven enrolled in Electronic Production & Design to develop a thorough understanding of Euroracks, analog synths, sound design, sampling, studio operations, mixing, Foley and ADR.

Being born to a Bharathanatyam (Indian Classical Dance) teacher and choreographer who founded the dance company “Nadanalaya Academy of Dance,” Beven has been surrounded by Indian Classical Dance and Carnatic Music since his childhood. He is currently a composer and choreographer for Nadanalaya and has composed many compositions and dance productions for them. His latest dance production “Shiva Leelai” was premiered in March 2019 to much critical acclaim.  Growing up he learnt various Indian Instruments such as Mridangam, Carnatic Violin, Konnakol and Kanjira. Apart from Indian Classical music, Beven also a classically trained pianist  and has completed all the AMEB Grade Examinations in Classical Piano. During his time at Berklee, he was heavily drawn towards jazz and world music styles, and continues to explore those genres in his compositions.

Some of Beven’s recent accomplishments include performing dance and music as the prestigious venues during the music “Chennai Margazhi Music Season” in 2017. He also directed “Kala Pravaasa” a show run that raised almost $10,000 in funds for “Red Dust,” a charity that supports young from remote indigenous communities in Australia. He composed, produced and engineered the dance ballet: “Thai Pongal – remembering Mother Earth,” that was premiered in Melbourne in April 2017.

In 2019, Beven had the opportunity to work as an orchestrator, arranger, engineer and additional music composer for a number of well-renowned composers, in particular Nivas K Prasanna, within the Bollywood industry, Chennai (India).

As of October 2019, Beven has been working full-time for “Arrested Development” famed composer David Schwartz on projects such as “The Good Place” and “Almost Family.” Beven wishes to continue working for and with masters in the craft of film scoring in order to hone his skills further, whilst simultaneously taking up short films, web-series and production music as his side-hustle.
